Fashion Writing Sample: Review of Milly Spring 2014 Fashion Show

This semester I took a Fashion Writing course at NYU. One of our assignments was to review a show in the style of Style.com, and I chose Milly Spring 2014.

Michelle Smith’s Spring 2014 Milly collection continued the brand’s recent shift towards a sportier vibe. Built on a palette of black and white accented with neon yellow, teal, and vermillion, the collection was a nod to DKNY in the 1980s with high-waisted skirts and boxy jackets.

Infusing color into classic feminine pieces is what Milly does best and this collection was no different. Tomboyish oversized jackets were offset by uber-feminine bralettes and high-waisted boy shorts glowing from under mesh tops and skirts.

While full-on sheer looks may not work for the office, downtown girls will surely swoon over the wearable black mesh sweatshirt top to wear over strappy tops on cooler evenings out. Standout pieces included a deep blue sharp scalloped trim jacket and a colorful boy-cut swimsuit in a bright watercolor print. Simple black or white strappy sandals and sleek gloves and satchels kept the focus on the waist-accentuating cuts of each piece. A perforated black leather top with a peter pan collar paired with a knee-length white skirt was the high point of the collection’s playful boyish glamour.
